The minimum requirement for an expert witness engineer is generally a professional engineer’s license in the state where a case is being considered by a court of law, arbitration board, agency, or other legal jurisdiction. However, a qualified expert witness has years of direct professional experience in that particular aspect of engineering, of which there are dozens. In addition, a good expert witness will possess excellent communication skills and have experience answering questions under duress.
Prior to accepting any work as an expert witness, I will review the case to determine whether it is something I am eminently qualified for and whether the case being made is substantial and largely provable. If these criteria are met, I will in concert with the client’s attorney develop a scope of services that will successfully navigate the case from discovery through hearing or trial and ultimately a decision or settlement.
